Five causes of an unsuspected heart attack

While some of the causes of heart attacks are well-known, including a sedentary lifestyle, obesity and diabetes, other causes may be surprising.

Knowing these five unsuspected causes of a heart attack can help you develop strategies to prevent them.

1. Outbursts of anger

A study investigating the relationship between intense anger and acute coronary occlusion confirmed that there is a markedly increased risk of heart attack within two hours of an angry outburst.

The findings defined an intense episode as one in which the person is “very angry,” “furious,” or “enraged.” People, particularly those with more risk factors, can learn methods to manage anger or undergo stress reduction training.

In addition, the study found that the use of aspirin and beta-adrenergic blocking agent medications tend to “reduce the relative risk of anger-triggered myocardial infarction.”

2. Extreme anxiety

In the same study, researchers found that increased anxiety also correlates with heart attacks. The findings show that an increased risk of heart attack is experienced during a two-hour window following an episode of extreme anxiety.

However, emotionally triggered heart attacks are also associated with long-lasting anxiety and poor mental health. Some therapeutic techniques and medications can address and mitigate mental anxiety or panic attacks.

3. Eat a very heavy meal

A 2000 study reported that large meals can trigger heart attacks. People should be cautious about eating “exceptionally large and heavy meals,” especially if they have had a previous heart attack or have coronary artery disease. You should avoid skipping meals and then binge eating an excessively large meal.

4. Vigorous exercise

For those who lead a sedentary lifestyle, any unusual or intense physical activity can trigger a heart attack, from snow shoveling to sex, extreme sports or strenuous aerobics. That doesn’t mean you should avoid such activities, but moderation is key. Especially at risk are those who exercise only occasionally and those who don’t listen to their body’s signals and don’t rest when they need to.

5. Alcohol abuse

Another area where people should practice moderation is alcohol consumption. Excessive alcohol consumption not only leads to heart failure, but binge drinking or drinking large amounts at one time can cause serious health problems, including heart attacks, strokes, or cardiomyopathy.
