There’s an old saying, “You are what you eat.” As it turns out, that saying is quite accurate. What you eat significantly influences your health. However, it’s not always easy to know which foods to choose when trying to eat healthy. Some foods seem innocent enough and even pass for healthy, when they are anything but. To help you clean up your diet, we’ve put together a list of 10 foods you should never eat again, plus some helpful tips on what to eat instead.
1. Margarine
For a long time, margarine was lauded as a healthier option than butter, but we now know that’s not the case. It’s full of highly processed fats that are not found in nature and have no nutritional value. Lightly coating your vegetables with a touch of butter from grass-fed animals is a healthier option. Just be sure to use butter sparingly.
2. Fruit juices
Fruit juices sound healthy, but they are just as dangerous to your health as sugary sodas. When you take all the fiber out of the fruit, you’re left with sugar water. Drinking fruit juices has been linked to obesity and other health problems, so put away the juices and choose a tasty piece of fruit instead. 3. Table Salt
Most people know that table salt can increase the risk of high blood pressure, but it’s still on tables in family dining rooms and restaurants across the country. It’s stripped of its naturally blended minerals, and it’s also full of additives. A better option is to opt for Himalayan salt, which is the original product.
4. Microwave popcorn
You probably think microwave popcorn is a healthy option for snacking. The problem: those microwaveable bags are coated with chemicals that have been linked to cancer. Fake butter is also a concern. It takes a little more time, but it’s healthier to pop the popcorn in a stainless steel skillet with a little organic butter from grass-fed cows or coconut oil.
5. Ramen Noodles
Those instant ramen noodles look innocent, but they’re packed with tons of salt and monosodium glutamate (MSG), which are known to cause health problems like excessive food cravings and migraines. Put away those instant noodles and choose regular pasta or whole wheat noodles instead.
6. Skim milk, low-fat milk
In the 1980s and 1990s, people began to fear whole-milk-based dairy. But skim and low-fat dairy do not help you lose weight. Several studies have shown that drinking nonfat dairy actually makes people less likely to gain weight, probably because it keeps them feeling fuller longer.
Semi-fat or skim options often contain a lot of added sugar, which is a major risk for cancer, diabetes, heart disease and obesity.
Skip the low-fat and nonfat options, and opt for full-fat dairy instead.
7. Artificial sweeteners
Since we know the risks of taking sugar, it’s easy to turn to artificial sweeteners, but these fake sweeteners have been linked to allergies, certain cancers, headaches, weight gain and high blood pressure. A little natural honey or maple syrup may be a safer, more natural option.
8. Overcooked or burned meats
Meats can be a great source of protein, but if they are overcooked or burned, they produce toxic and carcinogenic compounds like those found in cigarette smoke.
Don’t overcook meats. Instead, choose to cook them rare to avoid these carcinogenic compounds.
9. Processed cheese
Whenever the word “processed” appears on a food, you should think twice before eating it.
Processed cheeses are full of other ingredients, such as extra amounts of sodium, sugar, preservatives, emulsifiers, dairy derivatives and saturated vegetable oils.
You don’t want to put all that stuff in your body.
Skip processed cheese, pasteurized processed cheese-based foods and products containing processed cheese, and stick to the real thing instead.
10. Sodas (even diet sodas)
Sodas are full of sugar, so they are bad for your teeth and can lead to weight gain, and sodas have been linked to a wide variety of health problems, including diabetes.
But don’t think sugar-free sodas are any better.
They contain artificial sweeteners that have been linked to weight gain, joint pain, digestive problems and more.
The best option is to quench your thirst with water, to which you can add some fruit if you want some flavor.
