The truth about CoQ10

Coenzyme Q10 or CoQ10 is an antioxidant that helps generate energy in the body’s cells. Your body produces CoQ10 naturally, but its production begins to decline after the age of 30. Other causes of coenzyme Q10 deficiency may include: the use of cholesterol medications (statins), nutritional deficiencies and genetic defects in CoQ10 synthesis. Some health conditions, such as heart disease, brain disorders, Parkinson’s disease, diabetes and some types of cancer, have been linked to low levels of CoQ10. It is unclear whether low CoQ10 levels are the cause or the result of these diseases. But one thing is clear: numerous research studies have highlighted the very wide range of health benefits of coenzyme Q10. Here are some of them:

  1. Helps treat heart failure and high blood pressure. Research shows that taking a coenzyme Q10 supplement may help restore optimal heart muscle function, reduce oxidative damage and help preserve the health of the circulatory system, all of which may help in the treatment of heart failure.
  2. May prevent diabetes. According to researchers at the Japan School of Medicine, coenzyme Q10 improves insulin sensitivity and significantly lowers blood sugar levels. CoQ10 may help prevent diabetes by stimulating the breakdown of fats and reducing the accumulation of fat cells that could lead to obesity or type 2 diabetes.
  3. May help prevent cancer. Oxidative stress is known to cause cell damage and affect cell function. If your body is unable to effectively fight oxidative damage, the structure of your cells may be damaged and your risk of cancer increases. CoQ10 can help protect cells from oxidative stress and promote cellular energy production, thus promoting cell health and survival. In addition, low levels of CoQ10 have been associated with an increased risk of cancer.

Most experts recommend that to experience the best results when consuming a CoQ10 supplement, it should be taken in the form of Ubiquinol. Ubiquinol is the reduced form of CoQ10 and is considered the most effective way to consume CoQ10, especially for people over the age of 30 or those with any chronic health condition.
